# Advanced Scanner Overview

The Advanced Scanner is a powerful tool designed for in-depth analysis and custom stock scans. While the Quick Scanner is ideal for fast, ad-hoc scans using built-in filters on daily market data, the Advanced Scanner offers significantly more flexibility. It supports:

* Both daily and intraday market data
* Arithmetic calculations and technical indicators
* Custom formulas using predefined functions (similar to formulas in Excel)
* Results that are saved automatically and can be refreshed daily

This will take you to the Advanced Scanner list page. Create a new scan by clicking on the + icon.

### Scan Information

Fill in the following scan information:

* **Name**: Give your scan a meaningful name for easy identification.
* **Date Range**: Define the date range you want to scan.
  * Enable "Update scan results daily" to keep results up to date as new market data becomes available. This will disable the end date field.
* **Template**: Select from a list of popular templates or a user-created template.
* **Description**: Add notes or a description for your reference.

### Security Filters

You can narrow your scan using the following built-in security filters:

* **Exchange**: Filter by specific stock exchanges (e.g. NASDAQ, NYSE).
* **Security Class**: Filter by types of securities (e.g. common stock, ETF).
* **Sector**: Limit results to specific market sectors (e.g. Technology, Healthcare).
* **Industry**: Further refine your results by industry group within a sector.
* **Symbol**: Narrow your scan to specific symbols (*Note*: For companies with historical symbol changes, use the most recent symbol.)
* **Market Capitalization**: Filter by market cap range

### Data Filters

Data filters let you set specific criteria to identify matching securities. It uses a step-by-step dropdown interface that adjusts dynamically based on your selections, making it easy to build complex filters.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
**Create a Condition**

This defines *what* you are evaluating. It can be any of the following:

* Data point (e.g. opening price, total volume)
* Calculation (e.g. average volume over 5 days)
* Indicator (e.g. RSI, SMA)
  {% endstep %}

{% step %}
**Choose an Operator**

This specifies how the condition is evaluated. Operators include:

* Greater than
* Greater than or equal to
* Less than
* Less than or equal to
* Equal to
* Not equal to
  {% endstep %}

{% step %}
**Set the Comparison**

Finally, specify *what* to compare the condition against. It can be any of the following:

* User-entered value
* Data point
* Calculation
* Indicator
  {% endstep %}
  {% endstepper %}

<figure><img src="https://1155519678-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2Fon2dmGeVODO8QCgecDSI%2Fuploads%2FbHSRHH6Dp9eaMHiEqM5F%2Fdata_filters4.png?alt=media&#x26;token=4b08a01e-93c1-4a8d-8709-6d7b80a70fb7" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### Columns

The columns section allows you to define which data points are included in your scan results. This determines the information displayed for each result row of your scan.

Similar to the data filters, the columns section uses a guided dropdown interface to help you select from a wide range of available fields, including:

* Security Info (e.g. symbol, exchange)
* Data point (e.g. opening price, total volume)
* Calculation (e.g. average volume over 5 days)
* Indicator (e.g. RSI, SMA)

{% hint style="success" %}
For a detailed list of all available selections for creating filters and columns, see this [article](https://help.edgetracker.com/advanced-scanner/creating-filters-and-columns).
{% endhint %}

### Run scan

Once you've finished configuring your filters and columns, click "Run Scan" to submit your scan. Results will typically be available within a few seconds to 15 minutes, depending on factors like filter complexity and data volume.
